The Scientific Name for the Chicken and The Scientific Name for Poultry

This is useful information for students doing research projects and school essays on the scientific names of animals. We have compiled a list for your personal reference.

The scientific name for the domestic Chicken is Gallus domesticus.
The scientific name for the chicken is Gallus Gallus.

The scientific name for the Pigeon is Columbia livia.
The scientific name for the Duck is Domestic Anas platyrhyncha.
The scientific name for the Duck is Muscovy Cairina moschata.
The scientific name for the Japanese Quail is Coturnix coturnix japonica.
The scientific name for the Guinea Fowl is Guinea Numida meleagris.
The scientific name for the Turkey is Melleagris gallopavo.
The scientific name for the Peafowl is Phasianidae.

Thanks for this info. I was looking for information about the scientific name of the duck and I also googled "chicken scientific name". This is a realy useful page, I'll be bookmarking it for future reference. Pretty good list of all the poultry scientific names, good for students who are doing science fairs or writing papers.

I was answering the age old question of which came first the chicken or the eggs over at Slate.

I used info from your site to say the following:

The egg existed long before the chicken, Gallus domesticus or Gallus Gallus, came along. If you follow evolution, an animal was born to the precursor of the common chicken that mutated from its parent to the extent that it was generically different and became the ancestor to the chicken we know today.
So the concept of the egg came before the chicken but the actual chicken egg came after that first mutated chicken laid its first egg.

I found a great new place to get information about game fowl. It is a wikipedia for them. They also have a forum with a lot of information on it. Check it out, I know I learned a lot.

Hope you don't mind me saying this, but the scientific name for the Pigeon is Columba livia (and not Columbia livia)
